Amethyst is a powerful and protective stone. It guards against psychic attack, transmuting the energy into love and protecting the wearer from all types of harm, including geopathic or electromagnetic stress and ill wishes from others. Amethyst is a natural tranquilizer, it relieves stress and strain, soothes irritability, balances mood swings, dispels anger, rage, fear, and anxiety. Alleviates sadness and grief, and dissolves negativity. Amethyst activates spiritual awareness, opens intuition and enhances psychic abilities. It has strong healing and cleansing powers. Amethyst encourages sobriety, having a sobering effect on overindulgence of alcohol, drugs or other addictions. It calms and stimulates the mind, helping you become more focused, enhancing memory and improving motivation. Amethyst assists in remembering and understanding dreams. It relieves insomnia. Encourages selflessness and spiritual wisdom.
In Greek mythology, Amethyst was once a beautiful virgin maiden. A woman who's beauty cursed her by endlessly provoking the lustful attention of Dionysius (the Greek god of wine).
These torments became so relentless and overbearing that the girl Amethyst pleaded for the aid and sympathy of the goddess Diana (the goddess of wild animals). She pleaded with Diana to end her suffering at the hand of the inebriated diety, and Diana heard her prayers.
The goddess Diana, in a miraculous act of morbid charity, transformed the distraught maiden from a beautiful young woman, into a beautiful piece of Clear Quartz, shimmering in the bright sun.
Upon realizing the ramification of his wretched drunken manner, the god Dionysus wept. He wept so hard that his divine tears shed into his goblet of wine, upending the cup, spilling its crimson contents, and ultimately covering the beautiful newly formed quartz maiden, staining the crystal the deep purple color that we all know and love whilst bestowing it with the ability to suppress drunkenness.
To this day Amethyst is gifted to those that are looking to suppress vice. But most notably alcohol. The word Amethyst even derives from the Koine Greek word "amethystos", meaning... "not intoxicate".
This is a helpful stone for healers to use on days when you have perhaps done to much and need to pick up and replenish your energy. This is a good stone to use in meditation, as like purple amethyst, it's stimulating to the higher chakras, and in particular the third eye, while at the same time grounding you.
